Welcome to the ULCS website. The society is dedicated to all fields related to computing.
The ULCS, commonly known as simply 'CompSoc', meets regularly for a variety of events, both social in the form of bar crawls, pub visits and LAN gaming events; and also learning events such as help sessions. If you would like to see a full listing of the events hosted by CompSoc, please check our events page, where you can find a detailed listing.
While we naturally encourage members to take advantage of all of our events, we understand not everyone wants to - or has the time to - come to all of them. If you join the ULCS there is no obligation to come to any events. We do suggest you try to come to as many as you can, as they are all good events.
The ULCS is open to all students at the University of Leicester, regardless of the course you are taking. If you have an interest in any area of computing, or would like help with any computing aspects of your course (as is often the case with mathematics, physics and other students), you are free to join. You can participate in the events that you want to. We do ask for a standard £3 membership fee, which covers society costs.
Contrary to popular belief, plenty of people doing computing related courses do get out and enjoy themselves. The ULCS has a lot of social events, and everyone enjoys them.
A lot of subject-centered societies don't really do that much and only really get members from the courses they represent. This really isn't true of the ULCS. We encourage people from other courses to join - especially those from subjects with computing elements (most commonly Maths, Physics and Engineering students), along with anyone with any interest in Computing and Gaming. We run a lot of events, both academic and social, and try to be a useful resource to those trying to learn, and a fun society for those looking to go out or game.
If you want to join the society, come to our stall during freshers fair (145, In the O2 Accademy Room 1), or join online at the Students' Union website. It's never too late to join the society, but we recommend you get in early to take advantage of all our events.
We are easy to get a hold of, please check the contact page for more.
